The group members would like to give you an up date on the transport scheme from the school from September 2006 to July 2007.
This is the scheme that provides "After School Activities" transport to students from Belmont School Community Arts College to the outlying villages including Pittington. This service will operate from September, five evenings a week, leaving at approximately 5pm, sometimes doing two journey’s some nights.
Students must book their place at the school office.
This last year has been very successful with over 1038 student journeys made in the area at a cost of £2,438
142 student journeys have been made to Pittington, which is 13.7% of the total made in the area.
We have been successful in securing funding of £5,300 to allow the scheme to run five evenings per week. The County Durham Foundation gave a grant of £3,400 and Sherburn House Hospital Trust gave £1,900

Council purchases land to safeguard for future

A PARISH council has completed the first step in protecting a green site from development, by buying the land.
Pittington Parish Council hopes to secure village green status for 3.75 acres of grassed land in Littletown, a hamlet five miles east of Durham.
It is thought the parish council will be among the first local authorities in the country to register land in its ownership as a village green, since regulations came into force last April.
The site was one of four plots bought by the parish from Durham County Council, backed by a £5,000 grant from the National Lottery's Awards for All fund.
Other parcels of land purchased in the package, confirmed last week, are 4.2 acres of woodland, also in Littletown, plus allotments and adjoining green space, totalling 2.5 acres, known as The Buddle, off Coalford Lane, in nearby High Pittington.
Parish council chairman Andrew Sowerby said: "The funding has covered the land cost and we have had to meet the legal bill.
"These are plots that the county council has had up for sale round the parish, and we've taken this action to prevent developers coming in and building on them.
"We've been trying to buy them for four or five years, and I'm glad it's done now."
All the necessary forms have now been filled in and submitted to the county council, and we're just awaiting official notification of the registration as village green.
"It will give local people more control over what happens to land in their community."
Councillor Sowerby, who is from Littletown, said the plot for which village green status is sought is land reclaimed following the demolition of a row of houses known as Cross Street, "but, more years ago than anyone can remember".
